Friday qualifying session one: .494 .843 2.173 3.185 244.49 4.053 à 13th 4.790 301.81

READING, PA – (Sept. 18, 1998) Being qualified 16th and on the bubble isn’t a good place to be, but Paul Romine is happy with that. Entering the event, Romine and the CARQUEST team just wanted to get down the track without seeing tire smoke and they accomplished that today at the NHRA Pioneer Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa.
In the opening session of qualifying, Romine uncorked a 4.790/301.81 quarter-mile blast. He followed that up tonight under-the-lights with a 4.781/298.60, which puts him 16th in the 16-car field.
"Normally I’d be disappointed that we were not deep into the field going into Saturday qualifying," Romine said. "But right now I’m just happy we’ve made consecutive runs without smoking the tires. Clayton (Harris, the CARQUEST crew chief) now has some data to work with and if we’re lucky, tomorrow we can improve and have the opportunity to race on Sunday."
Professional qualifying continues Saturday with the final two sessions scheduled at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (EDT). Final eliminations are scheduled to begin, Sunday, Sept. 20th at 11 a.m.
