Dropped valve ends White's day in round two

READING, Pa. - NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car driver Marc White had valve train failure end a solid weekend for the Etterman Racing team in round two of this past weekend's Pep Boy's NHRA Nationals presented by Greased Lightning at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. White was leading his opponent, Paul Gill, when his motor went away, slowing him, and giving Gill an easy win.

White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Etterman Racing Pontiac Firebird strong with a 5.755 at 235.23 mph. In the first round, White ran the best he has all season with a 5.642 at 254.04 mph to take out Bruce Peterson. In his matchup with Gill, White took a .468 to .518 starting line advantage, but slowed to a 5.829 at only 200.47 mph, while Gill ran a 5.634 at 253.61 mph.

"The car ran real well," said White. "On Sunday, we kind of changed some things around, and got it into the mid 5.60's, and it was on it's way to the best run of the weekend against Gill, but at about four seconds into the run, it dropped a valve and blew the blower off the car. That was all she wrote."

Nonetheless, the team is still pleased with the car's performance in Reading. This weekend, White enters the Division 3 closer in Indianapolis in a 'must win' situation. He hopes to continue the same pace to keep his Division Title hopes alive. If he can win this weekend in Indianapolis, and make it to the finals at the final Division 7 race in Las Vegas, he will be this year's Division 3 Champ.

"We feel real good about going into this weekend," stated White. "We definitely came up with a tune-up that we think will work pretty good in Indy for us. I'm pretty sure it will be cool in Indy, and the track should be in excellent shape. We're pretty confident we should be able to go pretty fast up there."
