Toliver Brings Improved Schick Quattro Funny Car Back to Maple Grove
Crew Chief Norm Grimes' Tune-up Makes Car Competitive Again
READING, Pa., Oct. 6, 2004 - A race day that wasn't provided the foundation for the resurgence of Jerry Toliver's Schick Quattro/The Best of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Toyota Celica Funny Car team.
Heavy rain washed out the Lucas Oil Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 18, flooding parking lots and leaving large puddles were everywhere, forcing NHRA officials to reschedule the event for Oct. 8-10.
Weather improved by Sunday, however, giving Toliver and several other drivers an opportunity to make test runs in lieu of eliminations. The experience proved very helpful for Norm Grimes, Toliver's new crew chief.
The team made four runs and the car began to respond to the tune-up.
Since then, Toliver raced in Dallas (Sept. 16) and Joliet, Ill. (Oct. 3), qualifying each time. Last Sunday he started 10th (4.832 seconds), beating Gary Scelzi in the opening round before losing a close one to eventual race winner Del Worsham (4.864 to 4.940 seconds).
"We are excited about going to Reading," said Toliver. "We'll be ready to go. It was important for us to get the opportunity to test at Reading that Sunday. We were able to pick up a lot of (tuning) information.
"Norm is doing a heck of a job. He just needs more time to get in the groove," said the Temecula, Calif., driver. "We tested Monday at Joliet and were very happy with the results. Norm is starting to get more comfortable with the tune-up and the car is getting more consistent."
Grimes, meanwhile, is taking a methodical approach to finding quicker elapsed times.
"We're working on the car's performance early and in the middle of the run," he said. "That's where it needs improvements the most. I'm getting more comfortable, but it's not second nature to me yet and that slows me down and hinders my decision making."
There was more good news to report Monday evening following another good test outing.
"The car ran really good and it looks like it's starting to get a lot more consistent," said Toliver.
The season is down to just three races, beginning in Reading and following with stops in Las Vegas (Oct. 29-31) and Pomona, Calif. (Nov. 12-14). There's still time for to Toliver to add another win to his 2004 total. He won the season-opener at Pomona, Calif., February 29.
