ANDERSON, FOUR OTHERS WIN NHRA RACES ON GOODYEAR TIRES
READING, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2006) -- The National Hot Rod Association's Pro Stock drivers traded the national elapsed time record five times before Greg Anderson finally won the event and drew the championship contenders closer as Anderson led a group of five drivers racing on Goodyear tires to victory at Maple Grove Raceway.
The weekend was a make up for an event that was rained out in September. The victory total for the weekend was the best among tiremakers. It brought Goodyear's victory total to an industry-leading 110 for the season.
The other Goodyear-equipped winners at Maple Grove included J.R. Todd in Top Fuel, Phil Burkhart (Funny Car), Dan Mercier (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Doug Doll (Super Comp).
The Pro Stock elapsed time record took more hits than an old punching bag. Anderson was the first to break the existing record, then it fell to Greg Stanfield, Jason Line, Anderson again and finally Line again. The event ended with the record standing at 6.609 seconds. The Pro Stock field was the fastest in history.
Anderson beat Stanfield in the final round and slightly narrowed Line's lead over Anderson in the championship standings.
Burkhart beat Robert Hight in the Funny Car final. It was Burkhart's first victory since 2004, when he won at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado. Earlier in the day, 13-time champion John Force reclaimed the lead in the title chase. Ron Capps is second.
Rookie J.R. Todd collected his third Top Fuel victory of the year when he defeated Melanie Troxel in the final round. Doug Kalitta slightly improved his lead over Tony Schumacher in the championship chase and now holds a 52-point advantage.
Mercier beat Arthur Gallant in an all-Goodyear TAD final.
Doll collected his fourth victory in an NHRA national event.
