DENSHAM AIMS FOR BETTER RESULTS
READING, Penn. (September 16, 2005) -- Gary Densham qualified Friday for the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.
He qualified in the No. 16 spot and there are still two sessions left, so the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo team wasn't exactly happy as they worked on the car after the final run. They are, however, determined to make a better pass on Saturday.
Densham turned in a tire-smoking run during the first pass followed by a 4.929-second pass at 303.30 mph.
"We got behind on the first run and that set the tone for the day," Densham said. "We just need to keep working tonight and see what we can do to turn it all around tomorrow. It's going to be an uphill battle because it's going to be a little warm and humid but hopefully we can improve on the run we made today."
Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at noon and 3 p.m.
"No one made any mistakes during the second session of Funny Car," Densham said. "Even some of the best teams in Top Fuel made a mistake here and there and that caused some poor runs. But not Funny Car. Everyone took advantage of the cooler temps and we were forced to just make sure we got down the track.
"We're going to keep working at it until we can feel a little more confident about Sunday. The field is so competitive that no matter where you qualify these days, you have a chance of winning the race."
ESPN2 will broadcast qualifying of the Toyo Tires Nationals on Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. while eliminations can be seen Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 3 a.m. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
