Densham's hopes up in smoke
READING, Penn. (August 19) - Disappointment continued for veteran Funny Car driver Gary Densham at the 23rd annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals after hopes of advancement went up in smoke during the first round of Sunday's final eliminations.
Densham, driving Torco Racing Fuels / Racebricks Collectibles machine, captured the 14th position following two days of qualifying. He was matched with the no. three qualifier, Tim Wilkerson.
With ominous-looking clouds rolling over Maple Grove Raceway, both drivers quickly staged their Chevy Impala SS machines. Shortly after the green flashed, Densham's tires lost traction and the race was over as quickly as it started. Wilkerson went on to have a near perfect run and captured a top speed title, stopping the quarter-mile timers in 4.786-seconds at 328 mph to Densham's 8.111-seconds at 117 mph.
"It looks like I brought that little black cloud with me to Maple Grove," a dejected Densham said. "We had a pretty good run going for us during qualifying Friday night with a 4.893 run and then the chutes didn't come out, so off in the sand trap we went. That meant instead of working on our race day setup, we had to spend the time cleaning and fixing. You can't do that and expect to go rounds."
The Densham Motorsports team will head to Indianapolis to compete in the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the NHRA's biggest race of the year.
There were only eight Funny Car teams that made The Countdown to the Championship but Densham says the season still isn't over for those that didn't make the cut.
"There are still six races to go in the 2000 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season," Densham said. "We intend to use every one of those events to better ourselves, go rounds, get ready for next season and maybe win a little money along the way. We owe it to our loyal fans and our oh-so-important sponsors, Torco Racing Fuels and Racebricks Collectibles.
"We're racers at heart and know that you have to take the ups with the downs. We're doing better and sooner or later it's gonna show."
