Herbert beats Millican after staging standoff.

MOHNTON, Pa., Sept. 15, 2002 - Doug Herbert was the talk of the first round of Top Fuel eliminations Sunday during the rain-delayed Lucas Oil Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, but not about his win over Clay Millican.

Herbert refused to stage first after he and Millican reached the starting line, the first pair following the delayed start. The two drivers waited, their engines running, for a long time, until starter Rick Stewart interceded, telling the two drivers to shut off the engines and move off the starting line.

It began sprinkling again and everyone had to wait. By the time the track was ready for racecars, Herbert and Millican were ready, too. Their cars had been refueled and Herbert's Snap-on dragster went on to a victory over Millican - 4.731 seconds at 309.42 mph run to a losing 4.772 at 301.07.

"We've raced him twice this year and each time he's tried to burn us down," Herbert said of his decision not to stage first. "I told him (before the run) that I was going to go right in, but I wasn't staging first. He wouldn't go so I just put my car in park. I was just going to sit there."

Herbert faces No. 1 qualifier Tony Schumacher in the event's quarterfinals. Rain forced NHRA officials to postpone the race's completion until Monday.

Qualified: No. 9, 4.634 at 315.36 mph; First round: Herbert, 4.731 at 309.42 def. Clay Millican, 4.772 at 301.07; Quarterfinals: Herbert will race Tony Schumacher when competition resumes.
