Rain delay causes Advance Team to finish Monday morning.
Mohnton, PA-- Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team were forced by the hands of nature to hold off their first round final elimination run on Sunday afternoon as the effects of a close by hurricane caused rain delays at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, PA. At approximately 1:30 PM, Professional categories were called to the staging lanes for final eliminations. Frequent stops were made and, just as the Advance Team began approaching the starting line, NHRA Safety Officials instructed the last three pairs of Funny Cars, including Cruz Pedregon, to return to their pit area. For the second time during the 2002 season, unfavorable weather conditions would call racers back on Monday morning to finish out the event.
Qualified in the number seven spot, the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team made their way to the track early Monday morning, making necessary adjustments to the car. Ready to race, Cruz Pedregon and Ron Capps would be the second pair down the track for the day. Although Cruz had a better reaction time than Capps (.484 to .486), Pedregon suffered tire smoke at approximately 100 feet out, with Capps taking the win.
"Sure, we wanted to win first round," commented Pedregon, "Our pairing with Capps was a challenging one and even though we smoked the tires, we still had an impressive weekend. We were able to make clean passes down the track - from point to point, with little to no damage -- making runs in the 4.80's. We are starting to hit our marks, which gives us a sense of accomplishment and confidence that we are moving in the right direction."
Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team stole the number seven qualifying spot as early as Friday evening with an elapsed time of 4.877 seconds at a speed of over 310 miles per hour. With his first pass on Saturday taking him into the 300 mph marker again, Pedregon also went on to improve his ET to 4.863 seconds during Saturday's second session, securing the seventh qualifying position for the event.
"Having to come back on Monday was difficult for all racers," said Pedregon. "Weather conditions play no favors to anyone on Sunday or Monday. Even the most consistent guys out there don't always know how to handle these types of situations. The most important thing is to take what you learn and apply it next time."
The Advance Auto Parts Racing Team will travel to Tennessee next weekend to compete at the NHRA National event held at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, September 19-22nd.
