Chicago - Clay Millican of Team 104+ Octane Boost/Lehman Racing has added the NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa., to his 2003 schedule of events, and will race at the Maple Grove Raceway on September 12-14. This marks Millican's second year to compete in the event.
Millican and his crew made the decision to race in Reading after the postponement of the recent NHRA U.S. Nationals due to heavy rains in the Indianapolis area. Millican qualified for the field with an elapsed time of 4.667, but was unable to attend last weekend's make-up date for the race because of his commitment to race in the IHRA North American Nationals in Epping, N.H. Millican won the Top Fuel title at the event in Epping, and increased his points lead over Bruce Litton.
In his last NHRA race, the K&N Filters Supernationals in Englishtown, N.J., Millican was the number two qualifier and advanced to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon.
Millican, a Drummonds, Tenn. native, won his first Top Fuel event in 2000 at an IHRA event in Grand Bend, Ontario. He finished second in the IHRA point totals that year, followed by back-to-back IHRA championships in 2001 and 2002. This season Millican became the winningest Top Fuel driver in IHRA history with 26 wins, surpassing a 24-year-old mark set by Don Garlits in 1979.
Millican is currently in 15th place in the NHRA Top Fuel points standings, an impressive feat considering that he has raced in only seven of the 17 NHRA races that have taken place this year. He is scheduled to race in 12 of the 23 NHRA events this season, and is viewed as an up-and-coming star in the league. He has qualified for eliminations in all of the NHRA races in which he has competed this year, and was the number two qualifier in three of those races. He hopes to build on this success in Reading.
