Qualifying resumes at Reading; Ellis currently in fourth

MOHNTON, Penn. (October 8, 2004) -- In September, Pro Stock Bike competitors recorded one pass before rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused a postponement of the 20th annual NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals. Those runs stand and today, under dry skies, qualifying resumed, with each of the four professional classes having four qualifying runs remaining.

In the two qualifying passes scheduled for today, Chip Ellis, aboard the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell, owned by George Bryce and George Smith of G Squared Motorsports, ran his best effort thus far in the second session. The Americus, Ga., driver recorded a pass down the Maple Grove Raceway quarter-mile of. 7.123 seconds at 183.27 mph.

"We had problems shifting on that first run today," said Ellis, who is currently qualified No. 4. "We still don't know if the problem was the driver or the bike. In any event, we changed the transmission and the bike ran without any additional problems.

"We all feel that this G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell with S&S Cycle power has more left in it. It's supposed to be a little cooler tomorrow, so that could work to our advantage. I'm looking for something down around 7.03 or 7.04 seconds"

Qualifying ends with two sessions on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. These times are subject to change and reflect Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

TV UPDATE: TV coverage of eliminations from this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway will air twice, including a newly added telecast scheduled for Monday, Oct. 11, from 5-7 p.m. on ESPN2. Coverage for the rain-delayed event also will be replayed on Sunday, Oct. 17 from 7-9 p.m. on ESPN2. Television times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and subject to change at anytime without notice.
