ANTRON BROWN QUALIFIES SIXTH AT READING
MOHNTON, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2010) - Antron Brown powered his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Maple Grove Raceway. The 24-time NHRA winner posted his quickest lap of qualifying at 3.863-seconds on his final qualifying attempt.
Brown, who entered the final day of qualifying for the 26th annual Toyo Tires Nationals in the No. 17 position, used a solid tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power the Matco Tools/U.S. Army rail to a lap of 3.904 seconds at 314.46 mph. That placed Brown in the 16-car field at the No. 9 slot. On his final attempt of qualifying, the New Jersey native sped to a pass of 3.863 at 316.82 to improve to sixth in the order. There were 20 cars attempting to make the field this weekend at the Toyo Tires Nationals. Brown, who has five poles this season, has an average qualifying position of 4.62 in 21 races this year. Brown's DSR teammates Cory McClenathan and Tony Schumacher qualified second and third, respectively, on Saturday.
"We rebounded well today and made two good laps," Brown said. "I'm proud of my guys. We had the pressure and stepped up. Our car improved on both runs and that gives me a lot of confidence heading into tomorrow. Grand mom Brown is in the house and we always do good when she's at a race, so we're going to give it our all and try to bring it home at Reading." Brown will face off against No. 11 qualifier Clay Millican in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. Brown, who has a mark of 28-20 this season, is 4-0 in his career against the Memphis driver. Millican is making his first start of 2010.
