(February 11, 1998) Don 'The Snake' Prudhomme's team is coiled and ready to strike at Phoenix next weekend after their double fuel win at Pomona ten days ago. Ron Capps piloted the team's Copenhagen Camaro Funny Car to victory at Pomona by beating Tim Wilkerson in the final round.
After seeing his teammate do his job, it was Larry Dixon's turn in the Snake's Miller Lite Top Fuel dragster. Dixon defeated Jim Head in the final round with an ET of 4.752 to Head's 4.739.
When Dixon was asked if the win by Capps added any extra pressure, the reply was "Big time! Maybe that's why I cut the .429 (reaction time) at the light. I told the guys that next time, I'm going first!"
Both of Prudhomme's drivers said that much of the team's credit should go to the two crew chiefs on the cars. Dale Armstrong is the crew chief on Dixon's Top Fueler, with Roland Leong the crew chief on the Funny Car team.
"Having Dale Armstrong in your corner is very comforting" Dixon said. "He puts a tremendous effort into the car. He's constantly working on new things."
Armstrong's dedication to racing and the team has helped motivate the team to strive for new levels of performance. "It's contagious" Dixon said, while commenting on Armstrong's passion for the sport. "It carries over to the team, we went from boot camp to summer camp before we even put the car on the track".
Prudhomme's team will be looking to duplicate their Winter Nationals sweep of the nitro divisions at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, AZ when the ATSCO Nationals are held February 19-22.
This was only the fifth time in NHRA history that one car owner had swept the top two divisions at the same event. Joe Gibbs Racing accomplished the same feat at the 1994 Sears Craftsman Nationals with Cory McClenathan and Cruz Pedregon.
First round of Pro Qualifying gets underway at Noon on Friday, February, 20th for the ATSCO Nationals. Tickets are available by calling Firebird International Raceway at (602) 268-0200
