MILLINGTON, Tenn. (August 22, 2004) -- It was a nitrous versus supercharged final round at the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an exhibition class, being held this weekend as part of the NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals. Taking the win light for his second win this season was Mike Castellana, from Westbury N.Y., in a nitrous-powered Camaro. He defeated Mike Ashley's supercharged-powered Mustang.

A recap of the days racing is as follows:

First round of eliminations got underway at approximately 4; 40 p.m. (CDT). Looking at the weather gauges: air temperature 81-degrees, humidity 80-percent and a hot, trick track with a temperature of 119-degrees.

Mike Ashley and Richie Stevens, Jr. are the first pair out. Ashley with a new "Gone in 6.0 Seconds" paint scheme on his Unique Performance/InfiNet Insurance-backed '67 Shelby G. T. 500 Mustang skated around but took the win over Stevens in Roy Hill's Valspar-sponsored '67 Ford Mustang.

Both nitrous cars won. Mike Castellana, in a '68 Camaro, took the win over a red-lighting John Scialpi, in a '57 Chevy. Castellana's teammate Shannon Jenkins, also in a '68 Camaro, turned back Ashley's teammate Danny Rowe, who pilots a '63 Corvette.

The final pair in the opening round saw Tommy Gray, Jr., subbing for Von Smith in the Tommy Lipar Racing '04 Mustang, take the win light from the No. 1 qualifier here at Memphis and three-time 2004 winner on the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge Al Billes. Gray recorded a pass down the Memphis Motorsports Park quarter-mile of 6.315 seconds to 6.756 seconds for Billes, who drives a "53 Corvette.

One side of the ladder paired Castellana against Jenkins in the semifinals with Jenkins having lane choice by virtue of his 6.265-second pass in the first round. On the other side of the ladder Ashley has lane choice over Gray.

As the semifinal round begins at approximately 6:30 p.m., the air temperature has dropped to 77-degrees, the humidity has gone up a notch to 82-percent and the track temperature is now 114-degrees.

Ashley turned back Gray on a hole-shot. Ashley's reaction time was .052 of a second to .114 of a second for Gray. At the finish line Ashley recorded an elapsed time of 6.265 seconds to 6.236 seconds for Gray.

Castellana turned back Jenkins and has lane choice over Ashley in the final round. The pair has never met in a final round in NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge competition but in one previous meeting Castellana took the win light.

In final rounds against other NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge competition, Ashley has won two of four final rounds, while Castellana has won both of the final rounds he's been in. Both drivers have won one previous NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge race this year.

As the Pro Mod final round gets underway, the air temperature is 75-degrees, the track temperature is 104-degrees and the humidity has soared to 91-percent.

It was over at the start for Ashley. First he red-lighted. Then he crossed the centerline. All for naught as he receive no time.

Meanwhile, Castellana had troubles of his own. At the start he makes a hard left but is able to keep it off the centerline and slowly cruises to the finish line strip in 8.571 seconds at 113.93 mph. He is your 2004 NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge champion.
