Fred Hahn No. 1, again

JOLIET, Ill. (May 22, 2004) -- Severe weather canceled the final Pro Mod qualifying session today.

Qualifying for the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Challenge, an NHRA exhibition class, being held as part of the NHRA Route 66, ended today with Fred Hahn collecting his second consecutive No. 1 of the 2004 season.

Hahn was No. 1 at the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway at the beginning of this month. It was the sixth No. 1 of his career on the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Challenge.

Hot, humid weather, along with wind and rain, prevailed over the two days of qualifying causing crew chiefs to continually adjust for hot, sticky track conditions.

With team owner Jim Oddy handling the tuning duties and Hahn behind the wheel of the Oddy-owned Summit Racing Corvette, the West Seneca, N.Y., driver blazed the newly resurfaced Route 66 Raceway quarter-mile in 6.191 seconds at 229.35 mph..

Oddy-Hahn joined the new Pro Mod exhibition class established by NHRA in 2001. At the final event of the 5-race season in Indianapolis, Hahn claimed low elapsed time of the race when he recorded a pass of 6.170 seconds at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

With the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge increasing to 10 races in 2002, he won the Pro Mod class at the NHRA Matco Tools Supernationals in Englishtown, N.J. He then claimed two more titles in 2003. The first came at the NHRA Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. The other came at this track approximately one year ago at the NHRA Lucas Oil Route 66 Nationals.

These two wins, along with four No. 1 qualifying positions, propelled Hahn to the 2003 DRO/NMM Cup, emblematic of winning the Pro Mod point championship. Hahn has the quickest and fastest pass for the Pro Mod class, recording a 6.072-second run and a speed of 234.53 mph at Houston last year.

"Chicago would be a great place to repeat and get my first win of 2004," stated Hahn emphatically.

Following Hahn in the eight-car NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Challenge field is Mike Ashley (Melville, N.Y.), Mike Castellana (Westbury, N.Y.), Thomas Patterson (Houston), Zach Barklage (Lake Ozark, Mo.), Al Billes (Barrie, Ont.), Shannon Jenkins (Tuscaloosa, Ala) and Von Smith (Oak Ridge, Tenn.).

Eliminations are tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. (CDT) weather permitting.
