MADISON, Ill. (June 28, 2003) -- Tim McAmis took the top spot Friday and never relinquished the position through the final two qualifying sessions on Saturday. The St. Louis area driver and chassis builder, from Hawk Point, Mo., ran an elapsed time of 6.231 seconds at a speed of 226.51 mph in his '63 Chevy Corvette to secure the number one spot for the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an exhibition class on the NHRA national event circuit being run as part of the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

"We had a lot of pressure on us this weekend, running in front of a lot of hometown friends and fans," said McAmis. "You want to do good each and every race but you especially want to do good at your hometown track. There's some about the word 'hometown' that makes you try to perform better. Some of the pressure is off now and we'll begin to concentrate on tomorrow's eliminations.

"We will run our opening round tomorrow at about the same time as we ran the final qualifying session today and we had the best time of anybody in that session. So we should have a good handle on our tune up for the opening round," added McAmis, who recorded a pass of 6.241 seconds over the Gateway Raceway quarter-mile in the final qualify session.

Who didn't qualify was as much of a surprise as who did. Of the eight Pro Mods that qualified, three were nitrous-assisted with Shannon Jenkins, Rickie Smith and Mike Castellana making the field in third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Fred Hahn, who leads the DRO/NMM Pro Mod Cup point standings, didn't qualify due to engine problems. Then Mike Ashley, current third in the point standings and seventh entering the final qualifying session, was bumped from the field and will miss eliminations tomorrow.

Thus far in 2003, McAmis, currently fourth in the DRO/NMM Cup point standings, has won the season-opening Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. and claimed the top qualifying spot at the K&N Filters SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J., the same event he set the E.T. record for the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at 6.084 seconds.

Eliminations for the eight car field will get underway tomorrow. This weekend's Pro Mod action from the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at Gateway Raceway in Madison, Ill. (St. Louis) can be seen on ESPN2 on Thursday, July 10 at 3:30 p.m. (Repeat: Saturday, July 26 and Monday, July 28 at 5 a.m.). Times are Eastern Time and subject to change without notice.

First-round pairings, based on final qualifying results which ended Saturday, for Sunday's eliminations for the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an exhibition class on the NHRA national event circuit, being held at the Seventh annual NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway, the sixth of 10 events in the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge:
