BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 1, 2004) -- After a five race drought on the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an NHRA exhibition class, Fred Hahn, from Elma N.Y.,, took the No. 1 qualifying spot at the NHRA O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.
Although he won the 2003 DRO/NMM Cup, emblematic of winning the Pro Mod point championship, Hahn failed to make the field for the last three races of the 2003 season and first two races of this season.
"It's been frustrating not making the fields," said Hahn, following his first No. 1 qualifying position of 2004. "Most all teams are able to come to the first race in Gainesville with some testing under their belt. Living in the Buffalo area we don't have the luxury during the winter months to get on a racetrack and test. Therefore at the beginning of our 2004 season we had to use Gainesville and Houston to test. It's just starting to pay off."
Mitch Stott, Scotty Cannon and Ed Hoover filled out the top half of the ladder that will make up the eight-car field for the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge. Rounding out the field will be Gainesville winner Al Billes, local favorite Von Smith, Thomas Patterson and Mike Castellana.
Castellana will be the only nitrous-assisted car in the field. The other seven are supercharged engines with a maximum of 526 cubic inches.
1. Rule Changes: At the NHRA Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., two new rules will be in effect for Pro Mods:
a.) Ignition: MSD ignition part no. 7531 is accepted for use on Nitrous Oxide assisted combinations.
b.) Supercharger Overdrive limitations: The maximum overdrive on all combinations is 20-percent, a reduction from 25-percent.
2. Marketing Partnership: Mike Ashley, driver of the Unique Performance-built, Infinet Insurance-backed Shelby G.T. 500E '67 Mustang, signed a marketing partnership with Jegs and will carry the Jegs in-car camera throughout this and other events this year. His car will carry the Jegs logo throughout the season.
