POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2004) -- Ron Capps completed qualifying for the first race of the 2004 NHRA season Saturday by powering his green Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 14 qualifying position at Pomona Raceway after posting a weekend-best run of 4.936 seconds at 281.89 mph on Friday.

Capps drove his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 5.867 seconds at 160.29 mph on his first attempt of the afternoon on Saturday, before clocking a run of 5.299 at 202.61 in his John Stewart-tuned Chevy on the final qualifying run. John Force qualified in the No. 1 position with a pass of 4.746 at 324.36.

"These are the kinds of weekends that when you are shooting for a championship that you'll look back on and realize that you needed to dig down deep and do the best you could," said Capps, after finishing No. 14 of the 23 cars attempting to make the 16-car show. "When things are going your way, you're going to have a great weekend no matter what. We hire the best guys and I have every bit of trust in their ability. I'm confident that we'll role to the line tomorrow and have every shot at winning some rounds."

Capps, who won the historic season-opener in 1998, will match up against No. 3 qualifier Tim Wilkerson in the opening round of final eliminations which begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 29.
