POMONA, Calif.- Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, came to the 41st Annual AutoZone WinterNationals in Pomona, Calif. with the goal of starting the season on a high note.

His goal was to qualifying his truck, and go some rounds on Sunday. Whisnant achieved half of his goal today when he drove his truck to a 7.531 at 180.28 mph, to secure the tenth spot on Sunday's eliminations ladder.

"I would have liked to have been in the top half for the lane choice," said Whisnant, 'but that's okay we will work with it.

Whisnant arrived at the WinterNationals with a new Crew Chief (Kevin Horst), new additions to his crew, and a new sponsor PiranaZ Sportswear. So far the new combination has worked out well for the young team from Stockbridge, Ga.

"I feel good about the way we have run here this weekend. We are still fighting our tune-up some, but we are getting there. The truck has been lazy to the 330-foot line all weekend. We are whittling away at it, but we are not quite there yet. We are taking baby step in the right direction.

"Tonight Kevin (Horst-Crew Chief) will make some changes to get ready for raceday. He has this truck running good and I am confident that he will keep us going in the right direction. I am just going to concentrate on my driving, and leave the tuning to him.

"I have Greg (Stanfield) in the first round tomorrow. Greg is a good competitor, and a tough driver. He is a tough draw for the first round, but I feel very confident about tomorrow.

"On Sunday it can be anyone's race, I would like it to be ours. I would love to place this PiranaZ Chevy S-10 in the winner's circle tomorrow night. We are going give it our best shot."

Eliminations at the 41st Annual AutoZone WinterNationals get under way at 11:00 PST on Sunday Feb. 4.
