POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 4) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10, met Greg Stanfield in the first round of the 41st Annual AutoZone WinterNationals in Pomona, Calif.

When the tree came down Whisnant had a slight advantage over Stanfield, but that advantage went away when his truck would not shift into high gear. Stanfield ran a 7.533 / 179.16 mph to Whisnant's 8.361 / 121.17 mph.

"The truck wouldn't go into high gear," said Whisnant. "We broke the transmission, and that's unfortunate. We ran well this weekend, and we should have done better, but I am still happy with the way this weekend turned out.

Whisnant, of Stockbridge, Ga., came to the WinterNationals with a new crew chief, new crewmembers and a new sponsor. Whisnant feels that his team met and exceeded his goals for the first race.

"All in all, I feel good about how the weekend turned out. For our first outing with a new crew chief and sponsor, I feel like the team came together, and worked well together. That makes me excited about our chances for the rest of the season.

"This was our first race with Kevin (Horst - Crew Chief), and I feel like he gelled well with both the crew and myself. He is a professional, and I feel like his professionalism has rubbed off on my driving.

"Performance wise, I feel like the truck was running good all weekend. We found a problem in the chassis, which we will address in testing in the next couple weeks, but the main things is that we didn't throw any runs way.

"We qualified well, and I'm happy about that. I would have liked to have gone a few more rounds, but this is just the first race of the year. This is a good start and hopefully we can build on it.

"We are going to head home now. We will do some testing in the next couple weeks, and be ready to race in Gainesville."

The next race for the Pro Stock Trucks will be the 32nd Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. March 15-18.
