SCHUMACHER BEATEN IN SECOND ROUND

POMONA, Calif., February 10 - After suffering through numerous rain delays over the last few days, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher finally returned to the track here Tuesday but his day abruptly ended following a second round loss in the Kragen O'Reilly Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway.

Schumacher, who took out Del Cox in the first round of eliminations on Sunday, was beaten in the quarterfinals by Brandon Bernstein some 48 hours later in what was a tight race.

Schumacher's 3.865-second pass was just a bit slower than Bernstein's 3.834- second run.

"We were side-by-side pretty much the whole way down the track," said the Chicago-area resident. "Despite the loss, I'm proud of the way we performed today. We have no reason to be down at all."

The NHRA season opener marked the debut of Mike Green as Schumacher's crew chief as well as a totally revamped U.S. Army team.

"Mike and the guys are just great," added the six-time world champion. "We're going to win our share of races, I will guarantee you that. Like our Soldiers, they already know to always put the mission first and never quit. We're going to go down to Phoenix next weekend and come out with guns blazing."

Schumacher will now head for Firebird International Raceway, February 20-22, for the Arizona Nationals.

"We tested there two weeks ago and put up some good numbers," said Schumacher. "I anticipate we'll be just fine."
