JOHNSON JR. TO START FROM NO. 12 SPOT AT 45TH WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2005) -- Veteran driver Tommy Johnson Jr. kicked off the 2005 NHRA season by driving Don Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 12 qualifying position Saturday at Pomona Raceway.

The five-time NHRA winner made two 4-second passes during qualifying on Saturday at the Winternationals as he opened the day with a run of 4.908 seconds at 302.55 mph, before racing to his best run of the weekend, 4.867 at 320.28 to place him 12th in the Funny Car order.

"We ran into a few problems in qualifying, but I'm confident that we can run with the rest of the pack," Johnson said. "We're on pace to run 4.70s. It was a rain-shortened weekend, so we had to be a little conservative. Sunday is the day that matters and the important thing is that we're in the show."

Johnson will face off against No. 5 qualifier Frank Pedregon as he looks make a strong run in the 2005 NHRA Funny Car standings. Johnson is 3-6 in his career against the eldest of the three racing Pedregon brothers.
