JOHNSON JR. RACES TO FIRST-ROUND FINISH AT WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2006) - After racing his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to the second quickest pass of his driving career during qualifying for the 46th annual Winternationals, six-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. posted a round-one finish Sunday at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The defending Winternationals champion qualified in the No. 2 position with a 4.710-second elapsed time on Saturday afternoon at the historic Pomona track and was pitted against veteran nitro racer Jim Head in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson used a starting line reaction to race to the early lead, but the Skoal Racing flopper's engine dropped a cylinder early causing the loss of nearly 1,000 horsepower. Johnson slowed to a pass of 4.946 seconds at 311.56, while Head sped to a run of 4.881 at 294.43 to score the narrow victory.

"It dropped a hole (cylinder) at the hit," Johnson said. "At that point, there was nothing I could do. I was just along for the ride. You've got to drive it with holes out on race day. There had to be something wrong mechanically because it shouldn't drop a hole that early."

The Skoal Racing team will next compete at the 22nd annual CSK Nationals, Feb. 24-26, at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz.
