Tom Martino faced a tough assignment after qualifying 11th for Sunday's final eliminations of the K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals,. Not only would he be facing a tough opponent in Kurt Johnson, but he would have to do so without the benefit of lane choice.

Realizing he would need an outstanding effort to advance to the second round, Martino and the Jesel Motorsports crew made several adjustments to their Grand Am on race morning looking to maximize their performance. Unfortunately, their efforts did not pay off, as Martino's 6.874-second, 201.88-mph run was not enough to capture the round win.

"It would be easy to say that we were glad to qualify for a fast field, and that a lot of good cars went home. Although that is true, this team is not happy just making the show. We set two goals for this season - to qualify in the top half and go rounds. If you do that, you'll be in contention for the win at every race. This weekend, we came up a little shy.

"We're still learning how to fine-tune our Jesel Motorsports Grand Am, especially off the starting line. We made some adjustments for the first round that the car didn't like, and it cost us. We just need to run better at the bottom end.

"Even though we're disappointed, things aren't all bad. For example, we were able to see that the work we did over the winter improved our performance. We were competitive, even while working to find the tune-up. We'll take that, head home and go over the race car from nose to tail. By the time we get to Phoenix, we'll be even stronger."
