IMPERFECT PASS STILL GOOD ENOUGH FOR 8th ON THURSDAY

Tim Wilkerson accomplished a key piece of the objective on the season's first day, making an A-to-B run on the first pass of the season. He accomplished more by landing 8th on the grid after one day. And, he achieved both of those things on a run that left him shaking his head.

Wilkerson powered to a 4.182 at 294.43 mph in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang, but he was surprised by the elapsed time on the run and not in a positive way.

"We weren't out there to run a 4.18, and I know it's early and maybe I'm not as dialed-in as I usually am, but it sure felt better than that," Wilkerson said. "We just took a look at the data, and it basically just plowed through the clutch and that's all it ran. It wasn't very happy at the top end either, but I'd rather be sitting here 8th than outside the top 12, so we'll take it and work on getting better tomorrow.

"Tomorrow, we'll run after the dragsters and they're still out there running right now, under the lights. Once the sun goes down, the temperature drops in a hurry here, so it might be a pretty tough challenge to stay with the conditions if we're running at the same time they are. It might be one of those deals where the difference between the conditions when we're in the lanes versus the conditions when we finally run, are world's apart. We'll see what happens, and we'll do the best we can with what we have to work with."
