Winternationals at Pomona Postponed Due To Poor Weather Conditions

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2004) -- Soggy conditions put a damper on NHRA's 2004 season-opener as rain forced NHRA officials to postpone the 44th running of the K&N Filters Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. The event has been rescheduled for February 27-29.

Ron Capps, who won the season-opening event in 1998, debuted his new Skoal Racing green Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car Thursday afternoon by driving the flopper to the No. 10 qualifying position with a pass of 5.136 seconds at 228.04 mph.

Capps, who grew up on San Luis Obispo, Calif. and currently resides in Carlsbad, Calif., welcomes the opportunity to return to the Mecca of straight-line racing to finish the 2004 season kick-off event.

"I enjoyed a few years back when we had that 50th Anniversary NHRA race at Pomona that summer," Capps said. "As far as I'm concerned, this is the hotbed of drag racing. I'd be cool with five or six races at Pomona. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I live an hour from here, so to be able to come back is like having an extra race at Pomona Raceway.

"It's really not a good way to start the season getting in just one or two qualifying runs. So, it's good NHRA will bring us back and give us a couple more runs and that will give the fans a run for their money."

Racing action will resume at Pomona Raceway on Friday, Feb. 27 with one qualifying attempt. There will be two additional qualifying sessions on Saturday, Feb 28, and final eliminations will begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday, Feb. 29.
