Friday's Qualifying Canceled at Pomona; Capps Remains 10th

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2004) -- Ron Capps remains in the No. 10 qualifying position after Friday's racing action at the 44th annual Winternationals was canceled due to persistent rains.

Capps piloted his Skoal Racing0x2122 green Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car to a run of 5.136 seconds at 228.04 mph on Thursday, 10th best of the 23 Funny Cars competing this weekend.

"The great part about yesterday is that we found what the problem was," said Capps, who won the season-opener in 1998. "It wasn't tune-up related, it was just one of those freak things. In fact, the car was flying on that pass. It had one of the fastest speeds to half track.

"I'm so excited about driving the new Monte Carlo. That was the first time I raced it down the track and as soon as they lowered the body it was amazing how much I could see. I was telling Del Worsham how neat it was to see out of the car. Chevy did such a great job designing the new body. The car is very driver friendly."

Capps will look to move up the Funny Car order in his John Stewart-tuned flopper when qualifying continues on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. (PT). Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the K&N Filters Winternationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Feb. 21, and show two hours of final eliminations coverage beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 22.
