Pawuk Wins Motel 6 Award At Season Opener

POMONA, CA 2/13/06 Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk earned the Motel 6 "Who Got The Light" Award at the season-opening NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals this past weekend. The award is presented to the winner of the closest race during eliminations in the professional categories of Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock. Along with the $1,000 prize and an emblematic award, the winning driver knows that, for one race at least, his winning margin was the closest of the event.

Pawuk's first round win over Richie Stevens by a slim 0.0025-seconds, aided by his superior Reaction Time of 0.044 seconds and an elapsed time of 6.756 to Stevens's 6.740, resulted in the winning margin.

At the conclusion of the season Motel 6 will present the year's winner by the smallest of margins a $25,000 prize, but Pawuk isn't counting on that at this point.

"There are 22 races still left on the POWERade schedule," he noted, "and that means literally dozens of eliminations rounds, so anything can happen. Sure, we'd love to win the season-long competition, but we're not thinking about that at all. What we're concentrating on is winning rounds of eliminations, and winning races. That's our first goal. If we're lucky enough to take the Motel 6 "Who Got The Light" Award for the year, that'll be great, but that's not our primary goal."

Pawuk's win in the Motel 6 competition was his first since the award was conceived in 2001, and as he notes, "Every season winner's margin of victory was a lot closer than ours at the Winternationals. Heck, in '01 Jim Yates won it with a 0.000-second margin, so in reality, our chances are pretty slim. But still, it's kinda cool thinking about that kind of $25,000 bonus come November!"
