Koretsky misses field for NHRA POWERADE season-opener.
POMONA, Calif. -- The 2003 NHRA POWERADE® Drag Racing Series is officially underway when qualifying kicked off the 43rd annual NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
After four qualifying sessions -- one each on Thursday and Friday and two on Saturday -- Kenny Koretsky, driver of the KPK Motorsports/Nickens Brothers Racing Dodge Neon R/T, was off the pace finishing in the 34th qualifying position in Pro Stock.
Koretsky's final pass of 6.876 seconds at 201.04 mph, recorded Saturday was the best for the Richboro, Pa. driver. Unfortunately, Koretsky missed the field for tomorrow's eliminations.
"We learned that it's difficult to run three cars, which is something we tried to do here. We need to concentrate on just one or two. We're going to do that at the next race in Phoenix," said Koretsky after qualifying ended today. "(Engine builder) David (Nickens) is going to have a new motor together for that race. We are disappointed after the numbers we ran in preseason testing in Houston. Houston was good for us but we hurt our number one motor -- the one we were going to run here.
"All in all we learned a lot about what motor to run, tune up, about the clutch set up and we'll be good to go for Phoenix."
The next event on the 2003 NHRA POWERADE Drag Racing Series is the Checker/Schuck's/Kragen Nationals at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., near Phoenix. The event unfolds February 20-23, with professional qualifying beginning on Friday.
