SHOWERS PUT A HALT TO FRIDAY QUALIFYING AT POMONA

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2005) -- In a scene very reminiscent of one year ago, Mother Nature got the best of the NHRA's season-opening Winternationals. Last season, the kick-off race was postponed one week after persistent rains canceled the racing action. On Friday, rainy weather forced the cancellation of the day's entire slate of action, including the second scheduled professional qualifying session.

Veteran Funny Car pilot and five-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. looked to move his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo into the top half of the Funny Car ladder after racing to the No. 15 spot on Thursday, but Johnson and his Mike Green-led race crew will have to wait until Saturday to fire the 8,000 horsepower Chevy flopper.

"It's no big deal here," Johnson said. "This seems like the norm at Pomona. I don't feel any added pressure, it's the same for everyone. We all have to face the same conditions. Now, I'm just ready for some sunshine."

Don Prudhomme's Funny Car team will resume qualifying at the Winternationals Saturday when professional qualifying is scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. (PT). Johnson earned the top qualifying position at the 2001 Winternationals.
