POMONA, Calif. - Second year Federal Mogul Dragster driver Joe Fuentes lost to four time World Champion Rick Santos in the second round of this past weekend's AutoZone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. Fuentes' transmission broke right off the line, handing Santos the win, who ran an elapsed time of 5.416 at 261.02 mph. Santos went on to win the event.

The Austin, Texas, native qualified No. 10 in the class' all time quickest field with a then career best 5.450 at 256.26, then improved on that mark in defeating "The Bud Prince" Brandon Bernstein with a 5.441 at 257.04 mph.

"We went into the round with the same gameplan as we had when we won the first round," said Fuentes. "We were just going to go out there and try to run another .40, and I'm pretty sure we could have, but we didn't service the transmission. It's just another rookie mistake. We haven't serviced that particular transmission in a few races, and it rolled a sprag. You just have to learn from your mistakes and move on."

Off the track, Fuentes' crew won Best Appearing Crew, and was presented the trophy by NHRA's Director of Competition, Graham Light.

Even with the disappointing second round loss, Fuentes has high expectations for next weekend's Division 4 opener in Houston with his new found performance.

"We're hoping to tear up Division 4 and let them know who we are," commented a confident Fuentes. "We should be able to run some low .40's or even a high .30. Ora Vasquez, our tuner, will be with us again next weekend, so we're really looking forward to it."
