POMONA, Calif. - Second year Federal Mogul Dragster driver Joe Fuentes will be looking to pick up his first win during this weekend's season opening AutoZone Winternationals in Pomona, California.
Fuentes, an electrical contractor in Austin, Texas, finished the 2000 season off strong by running low 5.5 second elapsed times at over 250 miles per hour, and looks to improve on his personal best of a 5.51 at 252 mph this weekend, in addition to picking up his first win.
"We really want to qualify on the top half of the field this weekend," said Fuentes. "This will be our first race when our tuning consultant Ora Vasquez will get to be with us at the track, so we're hoping to get some good runs in."
"Everything is pretty much the same as we had it in Houston and Dallas when we were running good," continued Fuentes. "The only things we are changing is a few minor tuning adjustments that Ora might make."
In addition to his goals of winning his first race, Fuentes wants to make a strong showing to start his season in the right direction. Last year, his rookie year, he only competed in eight events, and plans to run a full schedule of 18 races this year.
"The beginning of the year is basically going to be the same as last year," stated Fuentes. "I will be trying to get as much seat time as possible, and we are all still learning. The car and the crew is ready, it's just up to me now. We have the horsepower, I just need to get more adjusted to it. We are looking to make a strong showing in points this year, both divisionally and nationally."
Qualifying begins at noon on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with two more sessions on Friday at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for round by round updates of the racing action from Pomona.
