Johnson Jr. Drives To Second-Round Effort at Pomona
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2004) -- Veteran driver Tommy Johnson Jr., who raced to a career-best run during qualifying on Saturday, drove his Don Prudhomme-owned blue Skoal Racing Funny Car to a round-two finish Sunday at Pomona Raceway.
Johnson qualified seventh with a career-best run of 4.759 seconds at 326.79 mph and faced No. 10 qualifier Whit Bazemore in the opening round of eliminations. The experienced drivers had equal .074 reaction times before Johnson's Mike Green-tuned Funny Car drove away after Bazemore's car overpowered the Pomona Raceway quarter mile and spun the tires. Johnson cruised to a pass of 4.831 seconds at 323.81 mph for the round victory.
Johnson used an .076 reaction time to take the early lead over No. 2 qualifier Gary Densham in the second round, before the Skoal Racing flopper spun the tires in the tricky right laneallowing Densham to drive by to score the round win. Densham raced to a pass of 4.764 at 326.48, while Johnson stopped the timers in 5.496 at 187.11.
"We knew we had our work cut out for us in that right lane in round two," Johnson said. "For some reason, that lane just wasn't as good today. Lane choice really played a big role. I really thought the car had made it. It normally doesn't spin the tires that late in the run.
"Overall, I'm very happy with this weekend. We've seemed to have turned the corner and the car is running good. It's a shame the season is over because our car is very competitive now. It was nice to end the season on a good note."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 45th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals, Feb. 10-13, 2005, at Pomona Raceway.
