Hammonds' shaky start has him looking for improvement on Friday.

Qualifying for the Auto Club of Southern California Finals got underway today with the professional classes making one attempt. Tom Hammonds and the Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Racing team took to the Pomona track hoping to continue their recent string of strong performances. Unfortunately, today's results left them looking towards one of the three remaining attempts to make Sunday's field. From the moment Hammonds' race car left the starting line, it fell victim to tire shake, which pulled towards the left hand side, leaving the former NBA player no option but to cut short the run and coast to the line.

"Today was a tough way to start, especially because we didn't get down the track, which prevented us from getting any data to tune from. We've had problems here in Pomona with the car trying to pull to the left off the starting line, and today it headed there right from the launch. Fortunately, we have three sessions left, barring any problems with the weather. We'll make some adjustments, either with a different wheelie bar or changing the pre-load on the clutch, and get our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier ready for tomorrow."
