WILK RATTLES, ROLLS, AND SLIPS TO 10th

Some big numbers were lighting up the scoreboard in Pomona, as the sun set on Southern California and the Friday Funny Car session was completed. For Tim Wilkerson and his Levi, Ray & Shoup team, the only number that mattered was 10, after his LRS Shelby rattled hard off the line and was unable to complete its lap under power. With the aborted run, Wilk slipped to the 10th spot after qualifying reached its halfway point.

The good news for Wilk is that he's still in the top 12, so his time does carry over to Saturday.

"I tried something a little different there, just to try something, and then it didn't seem to like it," Wilkerson said. "It put a hole out on the left side right at the hit, that caused it to shake, but I knew the cylinder was out so there was no use taking it any farther. It wasn't going to do anything good with a hole out. The conditions were pretty stout out there, and getting better by the minute, but we'll just have to go back to what the car likes and get back after it tomorrow. If the weather turns out anything close to what they're calling for, we should still be able to step back up and get into a better spot."

Wilkerson was exactly matched by his teammate, Bob Tasca, in terms of e.t. with a 4.154. Tasca, however, edged Wilk by 9-tenths of a mile per hour (295.08 to 294.18) to get the nod for 9th.
