Team Kalitta race cars ready for final eliminations at final event of 2007 NHRA season
POMONA, Calif., (Nov. 3, 2007) -- At the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Pomona, Calif., the final event of the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, The multi-car racing operation of Kalitta Motorsports from Ypsilanti, Mich., has high hopes of finishing a tumultuous year Sunday on a winning note.
Dave Grubnic, driver of the Zantrex-3 Top Fueler, qualified his nitro-fueled rail in the No. 12 qualifying spot in tomorrow's 16-car Top Fuel field, 4.555 seconds, 323.81 mph. Grubnic will face off against No. 5 qualifier (4.525 sec., 327.19 mph) Melanie Troxel in the opening stanza of eliminations.
Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, qualified his 8,000-horsepower racing machine in the No. 15 slot, 4.586 sec., 326.32 mph. Doug will pair up with J.R. Todd, the No. 2 qualifier (4.521 sec., 328.22 mph) for their first round match-up.
Despite his best qualifying effort of 4.876 sec., 323.12 mph, Doug's cousin Scott Kalitta, driver of the DHL Toyota Solara Nitro Funny Car, will not race in tomorrow's Funny Car eliminations. Scott failed to qualify for the very quick 16-car flopper field with a bump spot of 4.842 seconds.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 7 position for tomorrow's eliminations. She will race No. 10 qualifier Larry Dixon in round one.
Sunday's final eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m.(PT).
