Scott Kalitta eying the future as curtain falls on 2003 NHRA season in Pomona
Pomona, Calif., Nov. 5, 2003 -- As the 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series prepares to bow out of another thrilling season at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at the famed Pomona Raceway at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 6-9, Scott Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools/Jesse James/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster took a moment to reflect on his abbreviated, yet record-setting season behind the wheel of the fastest Top Fuel dragster on Earth (333.95 mph, Ennis, Tex., 2003).
"I am having a blast in my Mac Tools/Jesse James/Kalitta Motorsports dragster right now," said Kalitta. "I want to race through the winter! I can't wait to get out there in 2004 and make a run for the championship. My dad (crew chief and owner Connie "Bounty Hunter" Kalitta) and Jim "O" (co-crew chief Oberhofer) have our car running on mean. Next year should be awesome for us."
Kalitta, a two-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion (1994 and 1995), returned to the quarter-mile racing scene full-time in September at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis after retiring in 1997 to spend more time with his family and non-racing related business interests. Kalitta returned to the Top Fuel cockpit briefly in 1999, but plans on making this return a permanent one with the help of his team's many sponsors.
"I am having the most fun I have ever had in a racecar," said Kalitta. "It is all thanks to John Aden, Tony Merritt and all the great folks at Mac Tools and, of course, Jesse James. I also want to thank Red Line Oil, Champion, Technicoat Companies, Perfect Circle, Clevite Engine Parts and all of our sponsors who make this all possible."
