POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 12, 2004) - Ron Capps and the green Skoal Racing team improved their position in the Funny Car order Friday at Pomona Raceway when Capps powered his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Funny Car to a run of 4.887 seconds at 315.83 mph.

On Thursday afternoon, Capps' flopper overpowered the Pomona Raceway quarter mile, forcing co-crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler to be a bit more conservative with the tune-up on the Skoal Racing Chevy to ensure a full pass and a spot in the 16-car Funny Car order on Friday. The veteran pilot drove to the 4.887, 315.83 pass under sunny skies to place him 15th out of 26 Funny Cars attempting to make the cut for Sunday's final eliminations.

"The conditions weren't as good as yesterday, so we really couldn't stand on it," Capps said. "Being near the front of the order, we had to make a good pass to get in the show. The air was good, but there was a lot of sun on the track, so that made things a little tricky."

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, aims to move into the top half of the Funny Car order on Saturday when qualifying sessions are scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. (PT) at Pomona.
