BATTLE FOR FIFTH-PLACE SUPREMACY IN THE POWERADE TOP FUEL POINTS
Lucas Could Move As High as Fourth with the Right Race Scenario

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 5) -- Morgan Lucas darted to the lucky No. 7 starting position at the Auto Club NHRA Finals, running a spectacular elapsed time of 4.503 seconds along with a fast speed of 323.74 mph.

His Sunday first round match up against Doug Herbert is going to be his eighth meeting in competition with the ratio in previous encounters favoring Herbert, four round wins to Morgan's three victories. In 2005 alone, the pair has raced five times with Herbert leading in the head-to-head competition three wins to Morgan's two. The last time they met in NHRA National event competition was in the quarterfinals at Sonoma, Calif. back in July.

Another serious point of contention will be the battle for fifth place in the NHRA Top Fuel POWERade series. After the conclusion of qualifying, Lucas gained one point and reduced the separation between himself and Herbert to only 16 points. Simply put, a first round win would give him a top five finish in the standings since a round win is worth 20 points.

"We know of the challenge in the first round," said Lucas, who was the runner-up in last years Pomona finals. "We have to go up there and give it our best. We are set to win the round and advance even further to fourth if Rod Fuller should take out David Grubnic in the first round and if our team should advance to the final round.

"Besides that, it will be my last race with Joe Amato and Jim Dupuy (crew chief) and nothing would make me any happier than to get our first win together in our final race. It's been a wonderful learning experience for me and I can't thank everyone on the team for their support in the last year and a half."

ESPN2 will air the Auto Club NHRA Finals starting at 7 p.m. EST.
