Whisnant retires after first round.

POMONA, Calif. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet Cavalier, entered eliminations at today's 38th Annual Auto Club of Southern California seeded in the 15th position on the eliminations ladder.

Whisnant's opponent in Round 1 was fellow Georgian Kurt Johnson. So far this season Whisnant and Johnson have met four times in the first round. To date the score is Johnson four, Whisnant zero.

When the lights went green Whisnant and Johnson were practically dead even. Johnson pulled away at 330 feet, and kept that advantage to the finish line. Johnson ran a 6.871 / 202.91 mph to defeat Whisnant with a 6.878 / 201.88 mph.

"I am not totally disappointed," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "As a racer, I always want to win, but I did my job on the starting and gave him everything I had. He had the performance advantage and there was nothing I could do.

"For a rookie team, who didn't even attend the first three races of the year, we have a lot to be proud of. My team did a great job this year. We went to two final rounds, was the Number 1 qualifier in Seattle, and we end the season in the top ten in points. That is a record that teams who have been out here for years would love to have. We have nothing to be ashamed of.

"Now we will turn our attention to testing and getting ready for the Winternationals. A have a very talented group of guys working for us. I know that we have the room to improve, and that we have lots of potential to do better next season.

"We will attend the POWERade banquet on Monday, take a little time off, and get started on next season."
