DIXON SITS IN A MUCH BETTER POSITION FOR SEASON FINALE AT POMONA RACEWAY
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2006) -- Two weeks ago Larry Dixon started the NHRA event in Las Vegas from the No. 14 position. That day ended with a first round loss. A test session and a week off between Las Vegas and this weekend's season finale at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona has paid off so far.
Dixon will start the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals from the No. 6 position after he drove his Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite dragster to a 4.508-second pass at 331.12 mph Saturday during qualifying.
"We're already in a much better position than we were two weeks ago," Dixon said. "It was a big and very important improvement. The team just prepared the car well this weekend and it's showed."
Dixon will face Cory McClenathan in the first round of eliminations on Sunday. The Van Nuys, Calif., native is trying to improve on his three career wins in five final rounds at Pomona Raceway.
Dixon made improvements each day of qualifying and accomplished goals along the way.
"We were looking to run anywhere between a 4.49 and 4.52 during the first session today and we ran a 4.50," Dixon said. "That was real nice and I think that after running that, we felt we could take it one step further and try for a 4.48. We smoked the tires but we are happy that we were able to get a solid run in today."
Final eliminations for the 23rd of 23 NHRA POWERade events will start at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
"It's going to be all about the crew chiefs," Dixon said. "I'm expecting (crew chief) Don Bender is going to prepare the car similar to our 4.52 pass to start the day. I hope that will be enough to win first round and then we can go from there."
