POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2004) - Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to two solid passes Saturday at Pomona Raceway en route to the No. 8 qualifying position at the 40th annual Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals.
Dixon, who entered Saturday's final qualifying session in the 10th qualifying spot, used a tune-up from crew chief Dick LaHaie to blast his Miller-backed rail to a performance of 4.534 seconds at 326.16 mph to claim the eighth qualifying position. On his final qualifying attempt, the 35-time NHRA winner's dragster stopped the clocks in 4.555 seconds at 325.61 mph. Dixon, a three-time winner at Pomona Raceway, has never reached the winner's circle at the Auto Club Finals.
"We were really happy with the first run," Dixon said. "That 4.53 was only a few thousandths (of-a-second) from the quickest run of the round and it allowed us to move up a few spots. The goal on our final run was to pick up a little bit to get off of the No. 8 spot. The car didn't respond like Dick LaHaie wanted it to. I'm sure he would have liked to have been three or four hundredths (of-a-second) quicker on that run."
Dixon will met No. 9 qualifier Morgan Lucas in the first round of eliminations on Sunday at the historic Southern California drag strip. Dixon is 1-1 in his career against Lucas. This is the second consecutive race where the duo will meet in the opening round.
ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of qualifying coverage from the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Nov. 13 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 6 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Nov. 14.
