Pro Stock driver Justin Humphreys won't be racing at Auto Club Finals

Justin Humphreys has decided to begin his off-season one race before the other NHRA Pro Stock regulars.

The second-year driver from Monrovia, Md., said Wednesday his RaceRedi Motorsports Pontiac GXP team will not be competing in the season-ending Auto Club Finals at Pomona, Calif., Nov. 13-16.

"We're sitting this one out. There's no reason for us to be racing because we aren't in the top 10," Humphreys explained. "With the way the economy is, it's better for our team to save our resources for 2009. We will definitely be back next year."

Humphreys was among the top 10 teams throughout much of the 18-race regular season, but he did not qualify for two straight racesand then his engine supplier leftwithout warning at mid-season. Allen and Roy Johnson stepped in and Humphreys drove one of their Dodges for 10 races. But Humphreys, trying to adjust to the Mopar hot rod, couldn't hold on to his top 10 spot.

Another father-son engine building team, Warren and Kurt Johnson, supplied powerplants for the next five raceswhile Humphreys was reunited with his Pontiac GXP. Humphreys won his first Pro Stock race withWarrenJohnson horsepower in the Carolinas Nationals at the new zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C., in September. He is 11thinpoints, just a step out of the top 10.
