BECKMAN PREPARES FOR A HOME GAME IN POMONA
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 2) -- As an instructor at Frank Hawley's NHRA Drag Racing School, "Fast Jack" Beckman has spent countless days at historic Pomona Raceway. As a racer, Beckman has enjoyed considerable success in Pomona, winning a pair of Super Comp titles at the 1998 and 2003 Winternationals, held there each February.
Now, Beckman will return to Pomona for the first time as a professional racer behind the wheel of the Menards/Mail Terminal Services Top Fuel dragster at this weekend's season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals and he couldn't be more excited.
"I've watched over 23,000 runs down this track by our school students and I've made hundreds more as a driver in my Blackbird Super Comp dragster," said Beckman. "Now, I'm getting ready to make my first run here in a Top Fuel car and that is something I've waited my whole life for. This track already has a lot of special memories for me and I'm looking to make some more this weekend. I grew up in Southern California and I'm going to have a lot of friends and family members here this weekend and I really want to do well for them."
Beckman, of North Hills, Calif., will complete his rookie season in Top Fuel this weekend. He has qualified the Menards/Mail Terminal Services dragster in each of his 11 previous starts and is currently ranked 16th in the POWERade points standings despite missing 11 races.
The Pomona Finals will also mark Beckman's final appearance behind the wheel of Dexter Tuttle's Menards Top Fuel dragster. Earlier this week, Beckman, along with Rodger Comstock of Mail Terminal Services, announced they would be seeking a full-time fuel ride on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing tour for 2006.
"While I'm looking forward to the adventures that lay ahead, I also owe a great debt of gratitude to Dexter Tuttle, crew chief Jimmy Walsh and the entire Menards team for allowing me to drive their car this year," said Beckman. "With their help, I have been able to fulfill my lifelong dream of racing a Top Fuel dragster and I'd like nothing better than to reward them by finishing the season with a win in Pomona."
