Scelzi is No. 8 after two Pomona qualifiers

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 12, 2004) - Gary Scelzi pulled out a solid pass today in the second qualifying session for the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Nationals in his HEMI-powered Oakley Dodge Stratus Funny Car, and qualified No. 8 with an impressive 4.780-second elapsed time at 327.03 mph under warmer conditions than yesterday. It was the fourth quickest pass of that round and the fastest in speed.

In yesterday's first qualifying session, Scelzi, who is vying for second place in the Funny Car championship against Del Worsham this weekend, smoked the tires and was not qualified for the 16-car field coming into today's round.

"It did exactly what (crew chief) Mike Neff wanted it to do," he said. "We were just a little bit too far over center at about 300 ft. last night. He made a change and he called the shot of what it was going to run, and it did exactly that. He didn't say it wasn't going to go any faster and it didn't.

"We were as good as anybody in today's session, which is fine," he added. "When we run tomorrow we'll be able to pick it up a little bit and see exactly what we can get away with on Sunday." Two more qualifying sessions are scheduled for Saturday before final eliminations on Sunday.

"We're in good shape. We lost a run, but we're not hurt by any means. It means a lot that we ran quicker and faster than Force (4.809/305.84) and just a little faster than (No. 1 qualifier) Del (322.88 mph), so we're in good shape."
