Smith finishes No. 1, Ellis follows close at No. 3
POMONA, Calif. (November 5, 2005) -- On the strength of a track record 7.000-second run on Friday, Matt Smith, from King N.C., who rides the G Squared Red Line Oil/Skull Gear/Torco Racing Fuels Buell, finished No. 1, as qualified ended today for the 41st annual NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.
It was the first No. 1 for Smith whose run was the third quickest elapsed time in Pro Stock Motorcycle history. He will square of against Michael Phillips who qualified No. 16. Phillips best pass was a 7.218 second run.
"I'm not in the point race. Even if I win I can't get into the top 10 so we're just focused on winning the race and that's it," Smith said, who is No. 12 in POWERade points. "There are three bikes fighting for the championship but if we run into them we're just going to treat them like anyone else and try to win.
"I'm so privileged to be able to ride this bike. It's great just to be mentioned with the top riders but I feel like we deserve to be there. It'll be a tough road to the final because every bike in this field has to be considered really tough competition but we might have something for them all tomorrow."
Smith's teammate Chip Ellis, from Americus, Ga., was close behind in the No. 3 spot. Ellis recorded a 7.047- second run at 190.30 mph down the fabled Pomona Raceway in today's opening session of qualifying.
He will open tomorrow's first round opposite Geno Scali, who qualified No. 14, with an elapsed time of 7.190 seconds at 186.28 mph.
