Final race of 2005 on docket for G Squared's Ellis and Smith
POMONA, Calif. (November 3, 2005) -- Chip Ellis and teammate Matt Smith, aboard their G Squared-prepared and owned, S&S-powered Pro Stock Buells, approach this weekend's 41st annual NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway, on the grounds of the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., like any other race on the Pro Stock Motorcycle NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule. They are out there to win.
"Pomona is another race on the schedule but we like the track there and have done pretty well in past outings at the Finals," said George Bryce, who co-owns G Squared Motorsports along with partner George Smith. "We always try to make this race worth our trip. In the past, it's been pretty rewarding to go out there and finish off a good season and then attend the awards ceremony.
"We've won championships a few times and came in second a few times. I know we've has six championships and I think we been first or second 13 times. This year we'd like to finish in the top three but we certainly won't take the top honor. The guys at Harley Davidson and Screamin' Eagle got the job done again this year and we congratulate them -- Byron, Matt and Andrew (Hines) and GT (Tonglet) -- for finishing first and second.
"Finally, speaking of congratulations, both my partner George Smith, the entire staff at G Squared Motorsports and Jackie and me congratulate Chip, who has been nominated for the 2005 Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award. He's in some good company and it is an honor to have him among the group nominated for this prestigious award which annually recognizes the top rookie competitor on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series"
Ellis, along with three other drivers, Jack Beckman (Top Fuel), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Robert Hight (Funny Car), representative of all four pro categories, have been selected as the nominees for the 2005 Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award. The winner receives a $20,000 monetary prize and sleek ceremonial trophy during the NHRA's annual championship awards ceremony on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Ellis, who will ride the G Squared S&S Buell, set the track elapsed time record one year ago when he blazed the Pomona Raceway quarter-mile in 7.024 seconds. The Americus, Ga. driver enters the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals, the 15th and final race on the season-long NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, with two wins this season and is No. 4 in the POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings with 867 points, only 44 points out of the top three.
Meanwhile, Smith, from King, N.C., aboard the G2 Red line Oil/Skull Gear/Torco Race Fuels Buell, who had a runner-up finish at this year's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, considered by most to be the most prestigious event on the NHRA POWERade series, enters this event No. 12 in the point standings with 577 points.
