Doug Kalitta vying for big payday in Pomona as No. 1 seed in Budweiser Shootout
Pomona, Calif., Nov. 5, 2003 -- This weekend at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 6-9, driver Doug Kalitta and his Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster team will be a little more excited about competing than they normally are at an NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event. Besides the opportunity to get their fifth win of 2003 at the season's final event, they also have an opportunity to pocket an extra $100,000 as they enter the Budweiser Shootout as the top seed.
The Budweiser Shootout special event will be contested Saturday by the eight Top Fuel drivers who accumulated the most points during the 2003 Budweiser Shootout series, which began at the 2002 Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals and ended at the 2003 ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. Kalitta earned the top seed with nine No. 1 qualifying performances in that span.
Kalitta won the prestigious event in his 1998 rookie season and has competed in the Budweiser Shootout every year of his six-year career.
A $50,000 double-up bonus is also offered by the NHRA to any driver who wins the Budweiser Shootout and the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.
"We have won it before, so we know how," Kalitta said. "Our Mac Tools team wants to end our great season on a great note, and I can think of nothing better than winning both and taking home an extra $150,000."
Kalitta will finish the 2003 season in a career-high second place in NHRA POWERade Top Fuel championship points. Earlier this year, Kalitta Motorsports added a second Top Fuel dragster to their already potent arsenal by means of the Mac Tools/Jesse James dragster driven by Doug's cousin and NHRA veteran Scott Kalitta. With this addition, Doug thinks his chances of winning the 2004 NHRA Top Fuel championship are as high as they have ever been.
"Scott joining our Kalitta Motorsports team will take our whole team to a new level," Kalitta said. "We are all excited about making a run for the 2004 Top Fuel championship. The competition in our sport gets tougher every year, so having another set of data will give us both much more of an edge on our competitors."
"Right now we are focused on winning in Pomona. We really want a win to cap off this season. A big check from Budweiser would be great too!"
