Herbert makes first pass at last race
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2005) -- Doug Herbert is going to enjoy the entire weekend here at Pomona Raceway. It's the final NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series race of the season and Herbert is fifth in qualifying after one run.
Herbert drove his Snap-on Tools dragster to a 4.553-second pass at 317.79 mph to earn the No. 5 spot at the 41st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals.
Pro qualifying continues Friday with another 2 p.m. session. Qualifying wraps up with two sessions (11a.m. and 2 p.m.) on Saturday. Final eliminations will start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
But Herbert and the Snap-on Tools team have a great starting point with plenty of time to prepare for Sunday's final eliminations.
"That was a great first run for us," Herbert said. "All we want to do is make sure that we have a great starting point and now Wayne (Dupuy, crew chief) can tune it up and move us up the qualifying ladder. Nothing is better than taking the car out of the hauler and making a good pass from the start. At the same time we know we can do even better."
Herbert earned the Pomona Raceway victory during the 2001 summer event celebrating the NHRA 50th anniversary. He was runner-up to Scott Kalitta at the first of 23 events this season and is looking to be on the wining end of the finals this time.
"This is going to be a great weekend," Herbert said. "We have a lot of good things going on and we have two days of qualifying left before we run for the trophy. This was a good way to start the final event of the season."
All the action can be seen on ESPN2 starting with the qualifying at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. NHRA 2Day will air at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday followed by the eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) that evening.
