Rain delays Shootout; Herbert starts seventh in Auto Club finals.

POMONA, Calif. -- Inclement weather that plagued Southern California for the past two days forced NHRA officials to postpone the Budweiser Top Fuel Shootout to Feb. 8, 2003, but the Auto Club Finals -- the last 2002 POWERade Series event -- will take place Sunday at Pomona Raceway.

And Doug Herbert squares off against David Grubnic when competition begins -- weather permitting. Two days of rain ended the Southern California drought but gave race officials headaches. It wasn't until 4 p.m. (PST) that the decision was made to complete the event Sunday. Drivers only had one qualifying session, and that came Thursday.

Herbert's best was 4.674 seconds at 274.55 mph, even though the engine expired before the finish line. Grubnic qualified at 4.727, 303.43 mph.

The Shootout, where Herbert was to meet Larry Dixon in the opening round, will be contested during the season-opening Winternationals, also at Pomona Raceway.
