Herbert looking forward to '06 season
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2005) -- Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster couldn't be happier about leaving the grounds of Pomona Raceway -- the site of the 41st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals.
After all, the team didn't have the best weekend of the season and more importantly, they have lots of good things coming their way.
"It would have been great to be able to end the season by turning in great performance numbers, winning rounds and even winning the race," Herbert said. "We just didn't have a good weekend. We had a couple of hiccups with the car and we just never solved the problem.
"The great thing is that we have a busy winter coming up and we are going to come out next season ready to battle for the NHRA championship. We've made so many improvements over the last couple of months and that has been reflected in our performance numbers."
Coming into Pomona Herbert had been to three final rounds and four semifinals in the last eight events. Sunday, however, was different. Herbert posted a 4.553-second pass at 319.60 mph, coming up short against Morgan Lucas' 4.528 pass at 324.59.
It was the sixth time the two drivers have faced each other this season, each claiming three victories.
"We didn't have lane choice and that put us behind before we even started the car," Herbert said. "We made a race of it, but we just came up short. This is disappointing ending the season this way, but we really need to focus on all the good things we have coming up. We need to get back to the shop and start thinking about next season."
The NHRA POWERade season kicks off here at Pomona Raceway, Feb. 9-12, 2006.
All the action can be seen on ESPN2 tonight at 7 p.m. (ET).
